Gunthorpe - Saxon Cemetery

A small Saxon cemetery was excavated in advance of house building at Gunthorpe, within Greater Peterborough. Eighteen graves were fully excavated and the remains of several other individuals was also recorded where they had been severely damaged by contractors machinery. The individuals were accompanied in their graves by grave goods that consisted of pottery vessels and some personal ornaments such as broaches and beads. The overall impression of the site was that of a rather poor farming community, with individuals living on a poor diet and dieing at comparatively young age, perhaps caused by hard work and poor living conditions.

The cemetery dated to the late 8th and 9th centuries. There was no indication of any associated settlement with the cemetery.
