Barnwell - Roman Far

Excavations at Barnwell were undertaken as part of an assessment into plough damage on the site. Excavations revealed a large aisled Roman farm building with a series of surrounding yards in which were large pits - these appeared to have been dug for clay. The date range of the occupation seems to have been post Hadrianic and the site, on heavy clay soils has provided an interesting glimpse of late Roman farming on difficult soils and contrasts with the majority of Roman excavated sites on the lower slopes within the east midlands.
